Apolipoprotein E: A Tale of Two Diseases
Our research work involves investigating the role of apolipoprotein E (apoE) and apoAI in cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease. We study their role in relation to cholesterol transport, cellular efflux and uptake in the vascular and central nervous system, and, at the neurovascular junction. We employ a combination of biochemical, biophysical and cell biological approaches to study these issues, especially under conditions of oxidative stress under physiological and pathological states. The current projects in our group involve:
We are actively seeking candidates interested in pursuing graduate work in state-of-the-art biochemical, biophysical and cell biological research areas of direct biomedical relevance. Motivated undergraduate students showing a strong and promising potential for research are strongly encouraged to participate in our research projects.

We employ a combination of biochemical, biophysical and cell biological approaches to study these issues, especially under conditions of oxidative stress under physiological and pathological states. The current projects in our group involve:
- Examining lipid-binding mechanism and lipid-associated conformation of apoE and apoAI using fluorescence and other biophysical approaches
- Understanding structure-function relationships of apolipoproteins using chimeras and hybrids
- Evaluating use of HDL as a drug delivery and targeting vehicle using reconstituted HDL as a nanovehicle or “Trojan Horse”
- Investigating the role dysfunctional HDL as a risk factor in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases:
- Oxidative stress modification of apoE
- Alterations to the HDL lipoproteome
- Effect on apoE3/E4-Abeta interaction
We are actively seeking candidates interested in pursuing graduate work in state-of-the-art biochemical, biophysical and cell biological research areas of direct biomedical relevance. Motivated undergraduate students showing a strong and promising potential for research are strongly encouraged to participate in our research projects.
